When a pool solar heating system stops working, most homeowners assume the panels have failed. In our experience across Sacramento, Elk Grove, and Folsom, the panels are usually fine — the problem is almost always in the controls that decide when water flows to the roof.
The usual suspect: a stuck actuator valve
Your solar system uses a motorized actuator valve to route pool water up to the roof panels when there’s heat to collect. When that valve sticks or the actuator motor fails, water simply stops visiting the panels — the pump runs, the sun shines, and the pool stays cold. From the deck everything looks normal, which is why this failure goes undiagnosed for whole seasons.
Second suspect: a bad sensor
Solar controllers compare a roof sensor against a water sensor to decide when heating makes sense. A failed or drifting sensor can convince the controller the pool is already warm, or that the roof is cold, so it never opens the valve. The fix is a inexpensive sensor — not a new array.
Also worth checking
A controller set to the wrong mode or schedule, a pump running too few hours to move water through the panels, a closed manual bypass valve someone bumped during other work, or a clogged vacuum relief valve can all produce the same symptom: a solar system that looks installed and does nothing.
When it really is the panels
Panels do fail — leaks at the headers, cracked tubes after freezes, and sun-degraded plastic on older systems. If you see water dripping from the roof array when solar is running, that’s a genuine panel repair. But it’s the minority of the calls we run.
How we diagnose it
We check the whole chain — controller settings, sensors, actuator valve, pump flow, and only then the panels — before drawing conclusions. That order matters because it starts with the cheapest, most likely failures instead of the most expensive one.
Pro tip: if your solar runs on a timer but the pool temperature is inconsistent day to day, the actuator valve is the first thing worth checking.
